Anthology
800 Words
As a final flourish to the Ayr 800 Celebrations, Ayr Writers’ Club published an anthology of work entitled 800 Words. The book is compiled from winning entries from a National Short Story and Poetry Competition organised in 2005 by Ayr Writers’ Club and from some of the members’ own work which had to have been published during that year or to have won a prize in the Scottish Association of Writers or Club competitions in the 2004/05 season,
Joanne Harris (of Chocolat fame) judged the Short Story competition and said: “I really enjoyed reading the stories, they were all of very high quality and there was a nice breadth of variety.”
The Makar Press Poets (Jim Hughes, Rowena M Love, Michael Malone and Sheila Templeton) judged the Poetry Competition. Rowena commented: “It wasn’t easy picking the finalists and we debated long and hard before selecting the ultimate winner.”
The Anthology also includes a new story by Des Dillon who appeared at the very successful Ayr Writers’ Ayr 800 Creative Writing event in October 2005, along with Jenny Colgan and Janice Galloway. Rowena M Love co-edited the Anthology along with writer, Ann Burnett who also enjoys a long association with Ayr Writers’ Club. It was published by the Makar Press.
