Competition Rules of Entry

All current members of Ayr Writers’ Club are eligible to enter all club competitions within a given year, unless the following circumstance applies.

If a winner has won the same competition twice (since September 2020) they are ineligible to enter that category for the next two years.

Entries must be the original work of the entrant, not previously published or placed on any website. It must not have won first prize in any other competition.

A member may submit only one entry per competition. A fee of £4 is payable with each competition submission (unless the annual competition entry season ticket of £30 has already been bought). Competition fees are to be paid by bank transfer to AWC and the club treasurer informed by email.

Please submit your entry using Times New Roman 12-point font, double spaced. Poems are to be single spaced. Drama competition entries should be in fonts and layouts appropriate for the genre.

The title of your entry, and page numbers, should be inserted as a Footer on every page, excluding the front cover.

Your entry will be judged anonymously. Add a separate, centred, large font front cover page which includes:

  • The title of the competition you are entering, and its closing date
  • The title of your entry
  • A single-word pseudonym. You should use a different pseudonym for every competition you enter throughout the year.
  • The word count / line count / timing, as relevant (not including title)

All competitions have a one-week submission period. All entries submitted by midnight on the closing date will be sent on to the adjudicator. Closing dates will not be extended.

Entries must be submitted by email to the Competition Secretary – competitions@ayrwritersclub.co.uk – attaching your entry as a Microsoft Word (.docx or .doc) or a PDF file. The Competition Secretary will send you a Confirmation of Receipt email.

Once submitted, no alterations can be made to your entry.

The competition results, presentation of prizes, will be announced at the first Wednesday night meeting following adjudication. This is usually within 4 weeks of the closing date. An announcement is also made on the Ayr Writers’ Club Google Group Forum.

Every submission will receive individual feedback from the adjudicator. This will be emailed to the entrant by the Competition Secretary shortly after the results are released.
