Successes in September 2025

September brought continued success for Ayr Writers’ Club members, whether they were published or performing. Here’s a quick round-up.

Rose McGregor had a good month with her response letter to Mary Craig’s Symbolism article ‘The Wind ‘ in Mslexia 106. Her letter was published in Mslexia 107 . She also mentioned Ayr Writers, which is always welcome.

Rose also read two poems at the Graveyard Shift open mic night on the 23rd of September.
This event is held every few months in the Athletic Arms (aka the Diggers ) pub in Edinburgh EH11.
Poem 1 was her ‘Tea Towel’ poem which she sold three of that night, titled The Sporting Housewife.
Poem 2 was titled In Mither’s Fitsteps which is published in A Most Unsuitable Game and Rose sold three copies and signed them as requested.
The best part of the experience for Rose at the open mic was sharing it with Scottish Champion Biff Smith and other great poets. A great inspirational night all round . Well done to Rose.

Tracy Harvey had a good month in September. She got a short story called SMILING ASSASSIN published in an American online magazine called WORLD INSANE.

She also performed 20 minutes of poetry at the RISE FESTIVAL in NARTURE GALLERY in Newmarket street Ayr.
Most impresivley, Tracy interviewed Jackie Kay at TIDELINES book festival.
A guid wee month, Tracy!

Shona Quayle was asked to write a short article for the programme for Made in Dagenham which is being performed at The Gaiety later this month, finishing on 25th October. Shona has been asked most years to do this. Her article can’t be about the show itself as the MD and producer’s notes cover this, so she must find a connection. Shona explained that’s the hardest part. These articles are the only thing Shona has had published so far, but who knows what might happen going forward. Well done Shona.

Greta Yorke was delighted to share that her wee poem, Friends, is to be included in this year’s Scottish Book Trust’s Scotland’s Stories, Friendship’ Book. Books will be available in November. Congratulations, Greta!
Damaris West had 2 poems published, along with their audio, in Wildfire Words Open Submissions 8. Their titles are Orwell Clunch Pit and Fishing for Flatties. Great news, Damaris.
Regular columnists Chris Palmer and Linda Brown have again been published in Ayrshire Magazine.
Chris Palmer’s gardening article  – A Pudding Bowl, a Watering Can and an Overripe Banana – looks at the joys of growing runner beans and tomatoes with a hint of how an overripe banana can be useful in the greenhouse.
Linda Brown explores the grounds of one of Ayrshire’s famous stately homes  in  Dunnocks and Dragons- A Walk Around Dumfries House Estate .

Linda’s second piece in the magazine is an interview with author, playwright and performer Alan Bissett – Talking the Moira Monologues and More.
Well done everybody – very impressive.
