While many members have been thinking about holidays and visits to family and friends in July, a few intrepid AWC members have been busy writing and performing. Well done to all who have been flying the flag for Ayr Writers’ Club in July.

Marion and Fiona took part in an open mic evening on Saturday 19th July, to toast the anniversary of the death of Robert Burns. Marion read her prize-winning Flash Fiction piece, African Blackwood, while Fiona entertained with a short talk based on Burns’ Epigram to Rough Roads.
Tracy was on the main programme for the evening and read an extract from her poems The Missus, and Mary about Mary Campbell. She finished with her poem A Wean’s a Wean for Aa That. I’m sure they kept everyone well-entertained in Alloway Village Hall.
Fiona McFadzean was also to be heard on ArranSound every day for a week, reading her story about Sooty the cat. Well done Fiona.
In his latest gardening article in The Ayrshire Magazine, Chris Palmer points out the dangers of a garden with Japanese Knotweed or Mair’s Tail – both very difficult to eradicate. He also celebrates the first taste of home-grown tomatoes, the Big Mama variety – a new venture which has given Chris a few sleepless nights.

Also in The Ayrshire Magazine, Linda Brown takes readers on a coastal walk from Doonfoot to Deil’s Dike. As ever, she headed off with her camera where she spotted a kingfisher in the River Doon Estuary.

You can also read an interview with Ken O’Hara, who told Linda all about his latest project, a one-man play called, Mark Twain In Person. Ken has researched and written this performance which is based on the life, and using the words and writings of Mark Twain, the American novelist.
Ken explained to Linda, ‘Mark Twain In Person is a collection of the man’s stories, famous quips, observations and witty one-liners.’
Ken will be performing his show at the Gaiety Theatre Studio on 21st & 22nd August, followed by a single evening at the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine on 30th August.

Don’t forget to check out a report written by Jennifer Lerpiniere in the Events section of The Ayrshire Magazine. Jennifer recalls the buzz of excitement as members of Ayr Writers’ Club arrived at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick, for the annual awards dinner. Thanks to Linda Brown and Ken O’Hara for the photos.

That’s everything for July. I look forward to discovering what our members have been doing in August! Happy writing.
