Kicking Off 2026 – January’s Successes

Despite the Christmas and Ne’reday break, always a lazy time of year, we still have club members’ successes to celebrate.

First footing at New Cumnock on 8th January, half of Litereight, Helena Sheridan, Maggie Bolton, Greta Yorke and Linda Brown, entertained the members of the WRI with a lively selection of readings, including humorous short stories and poetry. Fruit loaf was scoffed, tea was swallied, the ‘best round of shortbread’ was duly judged, and Litereight sold copies of their books. A guid evening oot for all involved.

Meanwhile our prolific poet, Damaris West is on a roll. Two more of her poems have appeared in print.  Her Shakespearean sonnet Penumbra was published by Quillkeepers Press in their anthology All The World’s a Page.  Her second success this month,  a prose poem, with the intriguing title ‘”Three elderly nuns flee an Austrian retirement home to return to their abandoned convent”  has been published in the online poetry magazine Hum.  Hum | An Online Magazine for Art & Poetry

The January/February ‘Endeavour’ edition of Ayrshire Magazine has two contributions each from Chris Palmer and Linda Brown.

Chris’s first article – Stewarton and District Historical Society and Museum – tells of Chris’s visit to learn more about both – and his second gardening themed article  Discovery, Blue Danube and the Pleasure Of Decluttering explores apples, tatties and the joy of tidying up his garden.

Linda’s articles – Knit Weel – Stewarton’s Bonnet Toun History – is a journey back to the town’s textile past, while Looking Out For The Elusive Redpoll –is Linda’s winter nature walk through Cessnock Woods in search of the shy bird.

Chris and Linda thank Gill Sherry, Ayrshire Magazine’s editor, for the continued opportunities to write for this great magazine. Check it out here – www.ayrshiremagazine.com

So that’s January’s round-up……well done to all. Here’s to another creative and productive year.
