The final AWC meeting at the Mercure Hotel, for the 24/25 session, was a game of two halves. Linda and Carrie, co-presidents, smoothly and efficiently navigated their way through the club’s AGM, ably assisted by a hard-working group of office bearers who reported on the success or otherwise of the budget, membership, and competitions.
As well as our illustrious leaders putting down the gavel after two years, Maggie Morton spoke from the heart about how honoured she has been to be competition secretary over two sessions. She was thanked by all members present for her work. Maggie ended her stint with cake for all, to celebrate her recent birthday.
A new team was voted in and many kind words and offers of help and support were given.
Following the rush for cake at coffee break, Linda announced a writing prompt. A bit of fun with a small prize. Fifteen minutes of rapid story writing followed as members feverishly scribbled, attempting to include twenty-six words, one for each letter of the alphabet, in their tales.
Three plucky members managed to include all of the words and read out their weird and wonderful contributions about robot dogs, unicorns, strange men offering lemonade, yoyos packed in handbags and a women waiting in a café for her contact named Emerald Apple.
A difficult decision followed, but Kirsty’s effort ending with cosmic tennis won the day and she left delighted with a packet of Percy Pig sweets. No expense spared.
Now all that is left is the awards dinner next week. Raffle prizes can be handed over on the evening. See you there!
