And We’re Off ! Celebrating AWC’s Early Autumn Successes.

Just over four weeks since AWC’s 2024/25 season kicked off and already our talented writers have scored successes.

Four club  members have articles published in Ayrshire Magazine’s Issue 57 September/October 24

En Route to NC500 (W) –  our honorary member, Sheila A Grant, despite having parted from Sylvie her campervan, continues her Highland expeditions and adventures.

Largs Museum – Nigel Ward explores the seaside town’s museum and enjoys its collection of historical local treasures.

Murder in the Garden – Avid gardener, Chris Palmer, writes about ‘the persistent fight against pests and diseases.’

Skylarks and Thistledown on the Five Mile – Linda Brown takes in nature on a stomp along one of the Irvine Valley Trails.

Honouring Sir Alexander Fleming –  Linda Brown reports of Darvel Improvement Group’s project to upgrade the town’s memorial to a local and national hero.

Well done, folks!

Our poets are basking in glory too –

Rose MacGregor is excited to have her poem In Mither’s Fit Steps included in the anthology A Most Unsuitable Game – Celebrating Scottish Women’s Football Fifty Years After the Ban.

The book, published by Tippermuir Books (available to buy on Amazon and via Waterstones) is being launched at the Wigtown Book Festival on Saturday 5th October. Enjoy your special day, Rose.

Damaris West, is thrilled to have won first prize in the Walk-Listen-Create competition, which involves being Poet in Residence for a year. A richly deserved award for a fantastic poet.

Delighted to report that brand new member, Rebekah McVey, has been involved with a new publication as part of her job. Rebekah aka Bex had the responsibility of being Content Editor for a bookazine called The Feel Good Guide for Girls. It’s aimed at teenage girls and is all about looking after their mental wellbeing. The bookazine will be on sale from October 16th.  Sounds like a worthwhile project, Bex.

Over in New Cumnock, on October 1st, the Women’s Guild were entertained with readings from five AWC & LiterEight members. Maggie Bolton, Fiona Atchison, Helena Sheridan, Greta Yorke and Linda Brown shared flash fictions, short memoir pieces, humorous stories and poems to an appreciative audience before tucking into the Guild’s tasty hamebakin.

Meanwhile, our long-term Honorary member, Ann Burnett, has announced the publication and launch of her touching, funny and moving memoir A Last Journey. Ann’s book tells the story of her and ‘her husband Bill’s life together before Lewy Body dementia took him over, and her struggles to look after him until his death.’  A Last Journey’s launch takes place at no less a fabulous venue than The Festival Theatre in Edinburgh on October 15th.  Hope the book flies off the shelves, Ann.

Yet again, a fantastic roll call of our members’ creativity and achievements. Round of applause to all.
