AWC’s Successes in May 2025

Ayr Writers’ Club may be on holiday, but our members are still busy writing and performing. Congratulations to all!

Carolyn O’Hara participated in an open mic night (music & spoken word) in Saltcoats at the Melbourne Café.

This venue boasts some iconic events from its illustrious past, including providing the location for an episode of Tutti Fruity, featuring Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thomson.

On the first Tuesday of each month, they host an open mic event for the local community, and anyone who wants to join in. Informal, fun and friendly, Carolyn thoroughly enjoyed sharing a set of poems, and will definitely go along again.

Sounds brilliant!

Damaris West, following her success as AWC Published Writer of the Year, has now had two more of her beautiful poems published online.

Her poem When I grow old was commended in the Age UK Waltham Forest Poetry Competition but it won’t actually be published until their Poetry Showcase booklet is launched on 12th June.

I hope we get the opportunity to hear these poems at the club in the new session. Well done Damaris.

The Ayrshire Magazine continues to provide a wonderful showcase for AWC members.

Ayrshire Magazine – Ayrshire Magazine

The May/June issue contains a variety of articles written by Linda Brown and Chris Palmer.
Linda’s article, Love Newmilns ( Newmilns Regeneration Assoc.) highlights the efforts being made by the local community to improve the village while also retaining its heritage.
Covenanters, Coal and the Covies – A Historical Jaunt Around The Irvine Valley, is a whirl around the Valley, landing on famous spots and memories from the past.
Farewell to Blue Tits and Bluebells, follows Linda as she walks in her local neighbourhood, watching the blue tits fledge.
In Chris’s article  – A Green-Fingered Thief and Gardeners Question Time in Maybole, he reminisces about his mother’s habit of ‘obtaining’ cuttings, and a lively hour as part of a small group of green-fingered enthusiasts in Maybole for Gardeners’ Question time, run by the Association of Scottish Smallholders. A very entertaining read.
