Christmas Night at Waterstones 11 December 2024

“Where did I put that list of books I’ve got to look out for?”

“Did I wear the same Santa jumper last year?”

“Do I look really stupid in these antlers?”

“I don’t care what anyone says, I’m not wearing a silly hat.”

“Where did I put my raffle tickets?”

“I hope I can find somewhere to park.”

“I’d better sit with some brainy people. I don’t want to win the booby prize again.”

It can only be one time of year.

Twenty-five or so members headed for Waterstones on Wednesday night for our final meeting of the year. Considering it was baltic, with a lazy wind and lots to see on telly, it was a good number. And they were not disappointed. The formula doesn’t change. It seems to work.

An initial browse on the shelves. So much choice. Lots of book chat between members.

Firstly, a very useful summary from Kirsty, the boss, about what is selling well in the store this year. Lots of good recommendations. Kirsty transmits her boundless enthusiasm for books. Her list included a book I’m reading at the moment which was very pleasing. One of my books of the year. ‘Ootling’ by Jenni Fagan. Once read, never forgotten. How does Kirsty find time to read so many?

Time for a nibble. Lots of good grub and drink. Thanks to all those who brought something along.

This year our Kirsty set the quiz. I’ve done it in the past. You can’t please everyone.

“How can ‘Die Hard” be a Christmas film? It’s all about Bruce Willis in a dirty vest climbing down a tower block on a rope.”

There were few easy questions, but a fair contest. As usual the cream comes to the top. “The Pink Reindeers, except Gavin.” Next year I’m going to sit next to Linda. She is always in the winning team.

Then the raffle. I’m always hoping that I don’t win my own contribution. So many kind gifts from club members.

Kirsty was then back to announce the winner of the Christmas 50 words competition. The theme was ‘Ice’. There were a good number of entries. The winner was Bernadette Wardrop with ‘Another Broken Heart’. Bernadette stepped forward to read it out to us. A worthy winner.

A final browse . . .and the evening was over.

Many thanks to Waterstones for providing the venue, and the offer to discount every book sale by ten per cent. Thankyou Kirsty for working so late, giving us your helpful summary and judging our competition.

The raffle raised £105. As club treasurer, I can assure everyone who bought a raffle ticket that the money is a great help to the club’s precarious finances. The committee is very grateful.

A final thanks to whoever donated the ‘My Little Pony Bubble Bath’ to the raffle. It smells great, and I’m about to jump into my first and last bath of the year.

Happy Christmas to everyone.

See you in the Mercure on 15th. January 2025.
