Our daily lives are filled with small universal truths.
That piece of toast will inevitably fall butter-side down if you drop it; your pet cat or dog will turn their nose up at a food pouch flavour they ate with gusto 3 days ago; Word will ask you to save the document upon closing even though you don’t remember making any changes….
My small universal truth is that life began speeding up when we hit Y2K and it hasn’t stopped accelerating since. There is no other explanation as to how we have already reached May and held the penultimate session of our AWC 2025/26 Programme this week.
As usual, this last but one session was the club’s AGM – perhaps our least creative evening of the year
but certainly one of the most important. Our committee members reported on the key business elements for the club, namely our financial position, membership and competitions. Our outgoing club president, Fiona J, reflected on another productive year at AWC, with its mix of external guest speakers, internal member workshops, feedback circles and success evenings. They admitted their report was not just based on their opinions, but those across the club, having used the AWC member–written blog pages for inspiration.
Thanks were given to the AWC committee for their continued commitment, hard work and enthusiasm – they really are the busy ducks of our AWC loch; serenely gliding through our sessions whilst their feet paddle madly beneath the surface in between. The club also voted in the new committee members for 2026/27, including officially welcoming Susan to the role of club president. They have already started planning for the next AWC programme, and it’s bound to be another interesting and inspiring one – sadly I’m not privy to any clues; it’s still all secret squirrel at this point in time…
The final stage of the night was looking forward – our Awards dinner next week, a summer of member-led read-arounds and the final couple of decisions for the new AWC year.
There concluded our latest AGM, all washed down with tea, coffee and cake. It’s good to be an Ayr Writer.
