New Session Opening Night – Wednesday 6th September 2023

We’re Back!

An eager crowd of writers, well-known faces and new, gathered at the Mercure Hotel for Ayr Writers’ Club’s opening night of the 2023-24 season. Fanning ourselves gently in the very warm room, we listened to joint president, Linda Brown’s excellent presentation on what is to come in the new season. She also introduced the committee and made us aware of the need to raise funds for the club in these difficult times, particularly via www.easyfundraising.co.uk. This could generate funds for the club every time you shop online.

After the tea break (prices have gone up, by the way. It’s £2 a cup now – I’ll be bringing a flask) we had a chance to flex our writing muscles. After a short flow-writing warm up, Linda gave us seven opening lines from well-known novels. We had seven minutes to choose one and give it our own spin. New and potential members, as well as old hands, read out some excellent pieces. There was a distinct tendency towards the dark side in many. Perhaps the often chosen first line about sleeping in a gymnasium was to blame – why would anyone be sleeping there unless something awful had happened?

It was nice to welcome so many new members and visitors, and I’m sure everyone enjoyed the evening. Some of the visitors enjoyed it so much, they joined on the spot. So, another season has begun. Don’t miss out – come along next week and get writing. Who knows? This could be your big year!

Cheers

Maggie Bolton
