Tonight was a relatively laid-back evening in contrast to some of the more introspective evenings involving workshops. Here, members got a chance to bring in segments of their work anonymously for assessment and constructive critique. It also allowed for the members to demonstrate what they have learned from their time at the club. Many different pieces representing different formats, ranging from poetry, flash fiction, and segments of novels, were shared.
As for the genres covered, there was a good variety to be found. Some of them included fantasy, historical fiction, ghost story, and dystopian fiction. It was interesting to see the various pieces of work laid out for the attendees to hear as well as understanding how some people approach critique. In addition, it allowed people a chance to try and experiment in different genres and writing styles.
One of our members even brought in an already completed work, which illustrates the level of success that attendees have the potential to reach and have already accomplished. Regarding the feedback, while some people offered feedback typical of such an occasion such as writing structure, objective quality and themes, some more specific observations were made such as the age group ideally suited for a children’s self-help book as well as how they would best receive the material inside.
Overall, I would consider this evening to be a resounding success and an effective representation of what Ayr Writers’ Club can offer aspiring and already established writers in the local area. I am hopeful that people who attended will take the observations made to heart and improve on some already strong pieces.
