April Highlight Talk

Friends of Robert Burns Birthplace Museum are continuing to organise regular Highlight Talks on Wednesday afternoons.

The next in this series of monthly talks will be held on Wednesday 27th April 2022.

Entitled “Scotch on the Rocks: Literary Friction in the Scottish Enlightenment”, this talk, presented by Mark MacLean, former National Trust for Scotland Learning Officer, contemplates the Scots who punched above their weight in the international arena of ideas in the latter half of the 18th century.

This period was also one of acute anxiety for (and antagonism between) Scottish scholars striving to conform to the strict norms of standard English, expected south of the Tweed, without betraying their own unique literary character. Some of the heat and the light that this struggle generated is considered here.

These free Highlight Talks are held in the Robertson Room at the ROBERT BURNS BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM, Alloway, Wednesdays at 2.30pm.
