Stories Shared Beneath the Castle Walls

On Wednesday evening, some of our members enjoyed a wonderful visit to the bookshop at Culzean Castle for what turned out to be an inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable readaround.

We received a warm welcome from Anna and Rhonda, whose enthusiasm and hospitality immediately made us feel at home. Before the readings began, we spent time browsing the bookshop’s remarkable collection of second-hand books.

There are around 7,000 books on the shelves in the bookshop to choose from, with a further 1,000 carefully stored in the stockroom waiting to find their next readers. By the end of the evening, I suspect our members had made quite a dent in those numbers.

Linda opened the evening with the beginning of a historical cosy mystery which may yet develop into a full-length novel. Carrie followed with revisions to her children’s novel, based on the critique she had received from SAW. She felt the feedback had been invaluable in helping to strengthen the narrative voice emerging through the pendant in the story.

Maggie delighted us with her entertaining cat impersonations as she read a humorous children’s piece about a cat who had dropped from the sky. Bob shifted the focus to the wonders of astronomy with an engaging article written for a magazine. We were fascinated not only by his writing but also by the stunning photographs of the Moon and Saturn, along with the collection of telescopes he has used over the years, including the very first one he built himself.

Marion shared a heart-rending chapter from her memoir, much of it seen through her sister’s eyes as Marion herself was too young to remember the events. Yet, as she explained, small snippets still remain vivid in her mind’s eye.

Damarus opened the second half with another memoir, sharing a colourful account of her days living in Italy. Chris was our final reader and rounded off the evening with a thoughtful and insightful piece about being colour-blind.

Following each reading, lively discussion flowed around the room. It was fascinating to hear how stories, plots and plans were developing and where each writer hoped their work would lead. The variety of genres and subjects on display highlighted the breadth of talent within our group.

The evening clearly made an impression on our hosts. Anna was so inspired that she penned the following poem and has kindly given permission for it to be shared here:

June 10th

“Did you go?”

The words fluttered gently around the room

“Yes we did,” came the cooing answer from those who knew.

As before, they brought the sunshine in its evening glory,

As before, the place filled with their laughter and stories.

For the children, for the stars and for memoirs of life,

Their thoughts, their feelings released into flight.

They leave a winged echo
